Nikon W100 Review -- First Impressions
by Zig Weidelich
Preview posted: 01/06/2017
The compact and rugged Nikon Coolpix W100 is the well-connected successor to 2015's S33 model, the main upgrades being the addition of Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth LE, making the Nikon W100 compatible with Nikon's SnapBridge app. This allows the camera to automatically transfer low-resolution images via Bluetooth to a smartphone or tablet for quick and easy sharing, while the built-in Wi-Fi allows for transferring full-resolution files and movies, as well as for remote control.
The design appears to be very similar if not identical to the Coolpix S33, with the same curvaceous and modern look as its predecessor. Rugged specs have been slightly improved, though, with the Nikon W100 now rated to be shockproof from a fall of up to 5.9ft (1.8m) versus 5ft (1.5m) for the S33. The other rugged ratings remain the same: waterproof to 33ft (10m) and freezeproof down to 14°F (-10°C).
Both cameras share the same 1/3.1" 13.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, along with a 3x optical zoom with the same 35mm-equivalent range of 30mm-90mm. The available apertures remain the same at f/3.3-5.9 across the zoom range, and the lens employs a simple 6 elements in 5 groups configuration. The lens is not equipped with stabilization, and the camera relies on electronic VR to handle shake control by raising the ISO sensitivity in order to boost shutter speeds.
Speaking of shutter speeds, there is a difference in the maximum exposure possible, with the W100 allowing a 25 second exposure when add light trials is selected in Night Scenes mode, while the S33's longest exposure was 4 seconds in Fireworks Show mode. Top shutter speed for both cameras is 1/2,000s.
Other features that remain the same are the 2.7-inch 230k-dot LCD, ISO sensitivity range (125-1600), available exposure and scene modes (Scene Auto Selector, Backlighting, Bubble Effect, Cartoon Effect, Close Up, Diorama effect, Fireworks Show, Food, Interval shooting, Miniature Movie, Mirror, Neon Effect, Night Scenes, Picture Series, Underwater, Underwater Face Framing, Soft), metering modes (Matrix, Center-weighted or Spot), AF modes (Center, Face Detection and Target-finding AF), exposure compensation (+/- 2.0 EV), white balance options (Auto, Cloudy, Daylight, Flash, Fluorescent, Incandescent, White Balance Preset), burst performance (4.7fps for up to 11 shots), video options (Full HD video (1920 x 1080) at 30p, as well as VGA resolution (640 x 480) at 30p or 15p), and a Micro (Type-D) HDMI port.
Power is provided via an EN-EL19 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack rated at 220 shots per charge and is recharged in-camera with an included AC/USB adapter, just like the S33. Also like the S33, the Nikon W100 stores its images and videos on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards or in internal memory, though built-in memory capacity has dropped slightly from 25 to 22 megabytes.
The Nikon Coolpix W100 will be available from March 2017 for about US$160 retail, about $10 more than the S33 when it was first introduced, however Nikon has since dropped the price of the S33 to about US$110. The same color options of blue or white will be offered.
