Fuji XP140 Review -- First Impressions

Preview posted: 02/15/2019
Right on time. Fujifilm once again shows its rugged XP-series outdoor camera line a little love early in the year, by announcing the Fuji XP140, successor to last year's XP130 model. And as was the case in the last few iterations, the body, lens and sensor remain essentially the same.
Like its predecessor, Fuji XP140 features a 28-140mm 5x optical zoom lens coupled to a 16.2-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor which includes sensor shift image stabilization, in a body with the exact same dimensions and weight.
The real hallmark of the series continues to be its protection from the elements, and the XP140 actually improves on the XP130 in this regard. The XP130 was rated as water proof to 65 feet (20m), shock proof from 5.8 feet (1.75m) and freeze proof to 14°F (10°C). The Fuji XP140 ups the ante with 82-foot (25m) waterproofing and 5.9-foot (1.8m) shockproofing, while maintaining the same freeze proof rating.
So what else is new in the XP140, if has essentially the same body, lens and sensor? Well, the XP140 can now shoot 4K (3840 x 2160) video, but only at 15 fps. Full HD (1920 x 1080) and HD (1280 x 720) resolutions are still available at up to 60p, but the XP140 also offers a new square video mode at 720 x 720 pixels at up to 60p. Slow-motion 720p video recorded at 100 fps is now available as well, with options for playback at 60p, 50p, 30p or 25p (1.6x, 2x, 3.3x and 4x slowdown respectively).
The Fuji XP140 also boasts "Main Subject Recognition" to automatically recognize and track a main subject, and the self-timer now features "Face Auto Shutter" along with Smile, Buddy and Group options. There are now 17 types of Advanced Filters including "Rich & Fine" for boosting brightness and color saturation in the center of the frame, and "Monochrome (NIR)" for applying brightness and contrast different from regular monochrome photos to create a "dream-like" effect.
In addition, the top ISO sensitivity has been increased from 6400 to 12,800 equivalent, and it appears the XP140 no longer needs to drop the image size at the highest ISO, though we need to confirm that. Apart from some styling changes in the front, looking at the back of the camera, you'll notice the 4-way pad on the rear now has a Fn button on the left instead of Macro, though we don't know yet what functions can be assigned to it.
The XP140 can still shoot full-res images at up to 10 fps, but oddly the buffer depth has dropped to 6 frames from 10 frames on the XP130. The amount of internal flash memory available for storage has also dropped slightly, from 96 to 90MB, probably to make room for the new firmware features, though of course the XP140 still supports SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. CIPA-rated battery life remains the same, at 240 shots per charge from the same NP-45S battery pack.
Other features held over from the XP130 include the 3.0-inch, 920K-dot LCD monitor, built-in Wi-Fi with Bluetooth, a built-in flash with the same range and a motion panorama function.
Available from late March 2019, the Fuji XP140 is priced at around US$230 and comes in five colors: Sky Blue, Lime Green, Dark Silver, White or Yellow, though color availability may vary by region or retailer.
