Fuji XP130 Review -- First Impressions

Every spring, as regular as clockwork, Fujifilm shows a little love to its rugged XP-series outdoor camera line. Usually arriving in the first two months of the year, each new XP-series camera has shared the same basic formula ever since the line's origins in the FinePix XP10, which made its debut in February 2010. In fact, even the basic body layout has only evolved relatively subtly since that camera, and as far as we can see, the body is once again identical as last year's model in the brand-new Fuji XP130.
So what's the formula? To start off with, there's a 1/2.3-inch sensor coupled to a 5x optical zoom lens. Originally, the XP-series cameras had a resolution of 12 or 14 megapixels, but since the start of 2013 Fuji has settled on 16 megapixel resolution as being ideal, and once again the XP130 features a 16.2-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor.
After briefly offering a 36-180mm zoom lens in the original XP10, every subsequent XP model has opted instead for a rather wider 28-140mm equivalent zoom, sacrificing some telephoto reach for a much more useful wide angle. Again, the XP130 continues this trend, and like every model since the XP20, it also includes sensor shift image stabilization.
The real hallmark of the series, though, has been its protection from the elements. Ever since the original XP10, the XP-series cameras have offered up freezeproofing to as cold as 14°F (-10°C), and they've also been shockproof and comprehensively sealed to prevent intrusion of water and dust into the camera body.
The precise degree of shock and water-resistance has increased over the years, with earlier models able to withstand a three foot drop or ten foot immersion, and later ones able to survive falls of around six feet, and immersion to as deep as 65 feet. As you'd expect, the 16.4-megapixel Fuji XP130 is right around the top of this list, with 65-foot waterproofing, 5.7-foot shockproofing, 14°F freezeproofing and dustproofing all included.
So what's new in the XP130, if its essentially the same body with the same imaging pipeline? Well, the XP130 supplements its predecessor's Wi-Fi radio with a Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy radio, allowing a low-power, always-available connection between smartphone and camera for quick and easy sharing. The camera can use this to not only raise the much faster Wi-Fi connection automatically as needed to transfer images and movies, but also to synchronize time and location info via Bluetooth.
The only other changes we're aware of are a new electronic level function to help ensure you get shots with level horizons and no converging verticals, and an eye detection function which zeroes in on the most important part of your portrait subjects when determining where to lock focus.
Other features held over from the XP120 include the 3.0-inch, 920K-dot LCD monitor, 10 frames per second full-res burst capture rate with a lower-res 60 fps "Advanced" burst mode available, and a scene recognition auto mode for fuss-free shooting. There's also Full HD movie capture at up to 60 frames per second for as long as 29 minutes, a choice of 11 art filters (seven of them also video-compatible), and handy tools like an interval timer, cinemagraph mode and motion panorama function.
Available from March 2018, the Fuji XP130 is priced at US$230 / CA$240 or thereabouts in the North American market and comes in five colors: Sky Blue, Lime Green, Dark Silver, White or Yellow.
