Canon SX740 Preview

By Zig Weidelich
Posted: 07/31/2018

The Canon PowerShot SX740 travel superzoom may look very similar to its predecessor, the SX730, however there are significant upgrades under the hood. The SX740 gets Canon's latest DIGIC 8 image processor (the SX730 had a DIGIC 6 chip), which gives it the ability to capture 4K UHD video (3840 x 2160) at 30p, a first for a PowerShot. Audio recorded with video is now stereo instead of mono as well.

Additional improvements over the SX730 include a faster top burst speed, now rated at 10 frames per second up from 5.9 fps (7.4 up from 4.6 fps with continuous autofocus), Dual Sensing Image Stabilization with up to 3.5 stops of correction up from 3.0 stops, +/-3 EV exposure compensation range up from +/2 EV, and slightly improved battery life of 265 shots per charge up from 250 from the same NB-13L battery pack. Sadly, like its predecessor, the SX740 still has no RAW file capability.

Other functional changes include a slightly narrower sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 3200 instead of 80 to 3200, revised flash range, a mode dial that now has a Food mode setting in place of the SX730's Creative Shot mode, the removal of Story Highlights from the rear 4-way rocker/control dial, a new Feature Assistant mode for beginners, and an improved Auto Lighting Optimizer which helps minimize blown-out areas in your images.

Like the SX730 before it, the Canon SX740 still features a very generous 40x optical zoom lens with a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-960mm, a 20.3-megapixel 1/2.3" backside-illuminated CMOS sensor, a selfie-friendly tilting 3-inch 922K-dot LCD, and built-in Wi-Fi with Bluetooth, although it loses NFC connectivity.

Design and styling remain largely unchanged and the PowerShot SX740 is still available in black or silver body colors, however the grip material is now tan instead of white for the silver model. The SX740's pocket-friendly dimensions remain unchanged at 110.1 x 63.8 x 39.9 millimeters or 4.33 x 2.51 x 1.57 inches, while weight has decreased ever-so-slightly from 300 grams (10.6 ounces) to 299 grams (10.5 ounces).

Canon SX740 Availability and Pricing

The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS begins shipping in late August 2018 at a suggested price of US$399.99, the same price the SX730 was introduced at.
